The cost for the SAT Reasoning Test is $43.00.  Registration can be completed online at: www.collegboard.com.   The tests will be administered at John T Hoggard High School every testing date and at E A Laney High School all dates except March.  Mail-in registration booklets are available in the Student Services office.  All interested students should pick up an SAT Preparation Booklet to practice for the test.   The SAT Reasoning Test is the test used by colleges/universities for admission purposes.  The SAT Subject Tests are required by only a few universities for placement into appropriate level courses, but the Subject Test scores are not used for admission.  Be careful to register for the correct test.

High School Heisman Award – For student athletes.  Go to www.wendysheisman.com to apply.  For seniors with at least a B average.  October 1 deadline.  Student must ask faculty member to review/confirm accuracy of data entered before 10/1/07. -NHHS

Young Arts   For outstanding artists, (music, visual art, theater, photo, dance, writing)  Go to www.youngARTS.org. for info.  October 1 deadline.  $5000 to $10,000 awards possible.  --NHHS; Laney

Cooperative Extension is offering an essay scholarship with a first place price of $1500.00, second place $1000, and third place $500.  Only students in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties will be eligible.  The topic is “Agriculture’s Role in Sustainable Energy”.  Contact Aimee Sloan at 798-7669 or see Mrs. Williams or Ms. Keller.  Due date is Oct. 5 --Laney, Ashley

The Morehead Scholars Program at UNC-Chapel Hill Full tuition plus expenses and summer programs Outstanding academics; leadership; community involvement Self-nominated students may apply online www.moreheadscholars.org Self-nominations due by Oct. 5th. --Ashley

Any student interested in the NC State College of Textiles, or in any type of polymer chemistry should see Mrs. Williams about the Centennial Scholarship.  Awards reach up to $47,500 and include extra money for enrichment projects.  Students should express an interest by October 10th. Laney, NHHS,

NCSHP North Carolina Society for Hispanic Professionals--scholarship is due by OCT 15th. --NHHS

Laney will be asked to nominate one student for the Belk Scholarship at Davidson College .  To qualify, students must have stellar character, academic achievement, intellectual promise, leadership and service commitment.  Students interested in being nominated should submit a resume outlining these qualifications to Mrs. Williams in the student services office by October 15.  May be available for other schools also--check with your counselor!  --Laney, NHHS

The E. B. Scholarship Program at Erskine College in South Carolina is looking for students who have a Christian commitment, leadership potential, and outstanding academics.  Interested students must see Mrs. Williams immediately and apply before October 15.  --Laney

Catawba College has just been named the 16th Best Baccalaureate College in the South” by US News and World Report.  The first deadline for admission (and to be considered for scholarships) is October 19.  Awards start at $14,500 per year.  Apply NOW if your GPA is 3.5 or better and your SAT math and reading score is at least 1150. --Laney; Ashley

2008 Prudential Spirit of the Community Awards – $1000 and a trip to Washington D.C. may be awarded to a student who has been actively involved in volunteerism within the last year. Students interested in merit scholarships from Wake Forest University should apply for admission before January 1st.  Information for scholarships that do require separate applications is available on the Wake Forest financial aid website.  --Laney, NHHS

Wake Forest Univ. – To be considered for the Reynolds, Carswell, and Gordon Scholarships, apply for admission by Jan. 1.  Students applying for need based scholarships should complete the CSS Profile and FAFSA.  The Presidential Scholarship, (based on talent) requires a separate application.  The Poteat (for students active in the Baptist church) requires a recommendation.  Go to www.wfu.edu/admissions/finaid for more info.--NHHS

The North Carolina Blueberry Festival Association offers essay scholarships worth one or two thousand dollars.  Come by the guidance office for details.  --Laney

Laney can nominate one student for the Burger King Scholarship.  Students who wish to be considered must submit a letter to Mrs. Williams in the guidance office by *******.  You must have at least a 2.7 GPA, work at least 15 hours per week for 40 weeks per year, demonstrate participation in community service or extra-curricular activities and show financial need.  Include evidence of all of the above must be included in your letter. --Laney

The Gates Millenium Scholarship Program is designed for minority students who have at least a 3.3 unweighted GPA, who have demonstrated leadership abilities and who meet the Federal Pell Grant criteria.  Interested students should see a Counselor in the guidance office or visit www.gmsp.org.  --Laney

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is offering five $2000 scholarships to students entering the Landscape Architecture Program.  Students must have an overall average of 2.5 and an SAT score of 940 or better.  See counselor if you are interested. --Laney

The NC Bar Association offers scholarships to children of NC law enforcement officers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.  Go to www.ncbar.org for details. --Laney, NHHS

If your parent is a member of the NC Child Support Council or is a client of the NC Child Support Program you may qualify for a scholarship.  Applications are in the guidance office and are due before *****.  This can be used***** 6/1/07 deadline.  --NHHS

NC Education Lottery Scholarships – Student must complete FAFSA.  Students not eligible for Pell grants with an estimated family contribution of $5000 or less will be considered.  Grants will range from $1000 to $2300. --NHHS

The North Carolina Association of Educational Office Professionals offers scholarships to students who plan to enroll in any institute of higher education.  Applications are due to Counselor by ******.  --Laney

The Wilmington Kiwanis Club offers a scholarship for $1800  to a student planning to attend UNCW.  The scholarship  is renewable for four years.  Applications are in the guidance office and are due back to Counselor by *******  --Laney

The Wilmington Business and Professional Women’s organization offers scholarships to senior girls pursuing any kind of further education leading to entrance into the job market.  Financial need is a factor.  Applications are due back to Counselor in guidance by Thursday morning, May 3rd.  --Laney

Scholarships for Minority Students
     Students who are Asian-Pacific Islanders are invited to apply for the Asian-Pacific Islander American Scholarship.  Students may visit www.apiasf.org to begin the application process, or come to the guidance office to get the address to request a paper application.  Students must have at least a 2.7 unweighted GPA and be US citizens, US Nationals, or legal permanent residents.  Scholarships may be used at any accredited two year or four year program in the US, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands.  --Laney
