Bus Safety
Students who ride the bus to and/or from school should follow these safety guidelines:

While waiting for the bus
students getting on the bus
  • Arrive about five minutes early before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
  • Wait quietly in a safe location while waiting for the bus. Always keep a safe distance from the road. Stay on a sidewalk if possible.
  • NEVER TALK TO STRANGERS at the bus stop.
  • When the bus approaches, wait for it to stop and then WALK to the bus. If you must cross the street to get on the bus, be sure to look both ways before proceeding.
  • Enter the bus in a single line. Allow younger students to enter the bus first.
  • Hold the handrail as you get on/off the bus.
Once on the bus, it is important not to distract the driver so he/she can get you safely to your destination.
  • Listen to and follow all directions given to you by the driver.
  • Always remain seated and face forward.
  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself. Keep all objects (like your bookbag) out of the isle. Do not throw objects or put your hands out of the windows.
  • Talk quietly. If the bus comes to a railroad crossing, stop talking so the driver can hear if a train is coming.
  • Never play with the emergency exits.
When exiting the bus
  • Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting out of your seat.
  • Be aware of the danger zones around the bus which is approximately 10 feet around the sides of the bus. Walk and stay outside of this zone so the driver can see you at all times.
  • Always cross the street in front of the bus.
  • Do not try to go back on the bus if you forgot something as the driver may not see you. If you left an item on the bus in the morning, tell your teacher. Call the New Hanover County Schools Transportation Department if necessary to report an item left on the bus after school.
  • NEVER TALK TO STRANGERS at the bus stop. Do not get in a car with a stranger. Go directly home. Tell your parents if a stranger approached you.

Riding a school bus is a privilege extended to students that can be taken away any time for disruptive or abusive behavior.  All transported students are under the authority of the bus driver.  There are four basic rules that all students are expected to know and abide by:
  • Sit back in your assigned seat.
  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  • Use appropriate language and quiet voice.
  • No eating, drinking, or chewing gum.
