Walter L. Parsley
Elementary School, home of the Patriots, is located in Wilmington,
North Carolina. We opened in August of 2001. We are a
2006 NC Real D.E.A.L. School.
Our motto is "Parsley
Pride is on our side!"
Our mascots are the Patriot Kids.
School hours are 8:00am to
2:30pm. Students may begin arriving at 7:30. The first bell
rings at 7:53 and morning announcements begin at 7:55. Instruction
begins at 8:00am and students are tardy at this time.
We
are the Parsley Patriot Kids:
Liberty, Justice and Freedom.
We have a student enrollment
of approximately 580 students and a faculty of over 70 teachers and
support staff. We have 26 regular Kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms
and two special education class.
Students are taught
core curriculum in accordance with North Carolina standards. Students receive
instruction in Art, Music and PE once a week.
Our arts curriculum is further enhanced by PTA sponsored events held
throughout the school year. Arts
Alive is our semi-annual showcase
of the visual and musical arts allowing families to admire student art and
participate in hands-on activities. Fourth and Fifth grade students have the
opportunity to participate in Choral Performances. Just before the school year ends,
students put into play many of the PE skills they learned by participating in
Fun Day.
Students in Kindergarten
through Fifth grade are scheduled to visit the Media Center every week. Students
may also visit the Media Center during the school day from 7:30 to 7:53
and throughout the school day to check out books. Access to the computer lab is flexible. Teachers
sign up for whole class or small group instruction or projects. The
computer lab is an extension of the classroom.
Upon qualification,
many students receive enrichment in our AIG program (gifted
education). AIG
enrichment covers many curriculum areas including Language Arts, Math, Music
and Art. The needs of students qualifying for other special educational services
are also met.
Our occasional Friday production
of "Parsley
Today" is filmed
live from the classroom that is performing and is broadcast throughout
the building. Since each show showcases a different classroom that has
signed up to perform, the viewing audience of students, staff and parents
are treated to unique shows that generally spotlight what the class has
most recently been studying. This can be anything from a skit,
song, report, or even a game show. Student Council uses Parsley Today to kick off special projects like our annual food drive. Parsley Today is also used to recognize
student achievement such as Science Fair winners. Parsley Today is
optional for teachers who choose to participate. On the Fridays
when a show has been scheduled, we will be airing at 8:00am.
Our Character
Education program is an important part of the curriculum for Parsley
students. Our Guidance Counselor coordinates school-wide
Character Education programs. Classroom teachers integrate character
education in lessons throughout the week.
In March 2005 we
began Parsley
Postal Pals which is an in-school mail program.
Parsley staff are committed to
the academic excellence of all our students and participate in various committees
that meet regularly throughout the school year. One such committee is the School Improvement Team which also has elected parent
representatives.
Extra curricular activities/clubs
are offered. We
hold our own Battle
of the Books. In 2006, the PTA started the Parsley
Morning Walking program which gives students an opportunity to walk
before school starts promoting healthy students.
Our supportive and active PTA contributes to the success of our school with many special activities for students
and their families. Volunteers are also in integral part of our success. Their
assistance helps teachers and enriches the lives of those students they work
with.
Our school, staff, students and
PTA have earned many Honors and Awards since we opened in 2001.
