Computers
in the Classroom
The week of July 10, 2006 Blair received
134 new HP computers! Each regular classroom received four HP computers
with a flat screen monitor. Each computer is networked. Each classroom
will have one printer that will be networked or connected with a USB connection.
ETT Technology Grant
Blair was fortunate last year that we received a
huge grant from technology! The focus of the grant has been
differentiation in the classroom. Teachers have attended workshops with Dr.
H. Davis and she also observed teachers in grades 4 and 5 at Blair. We
have received three class sets of Danas which like a mini-computer along
with a laptop for teacher instruction. We have received an instrument
called
"Key to Access" which will enable students to download books along with
other work and listen to them at their own pace. We have received five
laser networkable printers for teachers in 4th and 5th grades. We
received four classroom sets of the Renaissance Learning response
systems along with a laptop for each teacher. Six digital cameras have
also been purchased with the grant. Three teachers will be receiving a
Promethan ActivBoard with slates! Two teachers have received a Digital
Visualizer which will take the place of an overhead. We have also
received several microscopes that can be connected to the computer. Each
teacher involved in the grant that has a classroom has also received a
projector which was mounted in the spring. Teachers have also received a
remote presentation to go with their laptops, flash drives, and memory
cards. This is exciting for everyone at Blair involved in the grant and
will aid the teacher as she reaches each student.

Blair's Computer Lab
received 30 new HP computers for the
2006-2007 school year.
Students visit the lab once a week to work on computer skills (taught
from the Standard Course of
Study) and activities that integrate
classroom studies. Students look forward to Computer Lab day!
PC
Computers
Each classroom received a HP desktop computer in the 2004-2005 school
year.
This computer is used mostly with NC Wise. NC Wise is a web based
program that the
state adopted and New Hanover County began using the program in the
spring of 2005. At this time, the computer is used to take attendance each morning.
Third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers have access to
the gradebook component of this program. Teachers can access this web
based program from home with a DSL connection to add grades to their
gradebook and check other information that is helpful to the teacher
while away from school. The parent component of this program will be
established in the next couple of years. Parents
will be able to track the
progress of their student when this part of the program is adopted.
With the state, county, administrators, teachers, and parents working
together should prove to be a positive way of communication!

If
you have questions about the Computer Lab, computers in the classrooms,
Blair on the Air, or this web site, please let me know. I have been the
facilitator at Blair for the past
nine years and I have been at Blair for thirty years.
Needless to say, the Blair staff is an extension of my family! I love
Blair and I enjoy my job. Each day is a challenge that I look forward
to. The PTA supports
technology in so many ways at Blair and for that I am so appreciative.
